Loanwords as Pseudo-compounds in Malagasy
نویسنده
چکیده
Reduplication in Malagasy copies a two-mora-long section of the base (e.g., alíka ‘dog’ → alìkalíka ‘something like a dog’). Although the reduplicant is usually left-anchored to the main-stress syllable, there are two types of words in the language that place the reduplicant elsewhere (anchored to secondary stress): finally-stressed loanwords, and native compounds. I argue that loanwords behave like compounds in reduplication because they are in fact analyzed by speakers as compounds. This reanalysis is triggered by the fact that the stress pattern in these loanwords is otherwise found only in compounds.

Statistical Identification of English Loanwords in Korean Using Automatically Generated Training Data
This paper describes an accurate, extensible method for automatically classifying unknown foreign words that requires minimal monolingual resources and no bilingual training data (which is often difficult to obtain for an arbitrary language pair). We use a small set of phonologically-based transliteration rules to generate a potentially unlimited amount of pseudo-data that can be used to train ...
متن کاملWhat’s No? Focus and Clause Linking in Malagasy
Contrastively focused constituents in Malagasy, a verb-initial language, occur at the left edge of the clause, separated from the remainder of the clause by the particle no (previous work has shown that no forms a constituent with what follows it, here called the NO-PHRASE). The Malagasy focus construction is usually analyzed as a pseudo-cleft: the focus phrase constitutes the main predicate of...
متن کاملSegmentation and Translation of Japanese Multi-word Loanwords
The Japanese language has absorbed large numbers of loanwords from many languages, in particular English. As well as using single loanwords, compound nouns, multiword expressions (MWEs), etc. constructed from loanwords can be found in use in very large quantities. In this paper we describe a system which has been developed to segment Japanese loanword MWEs and construct likely English translati...
متن کاملExtracting Loanwords from Mongolian Corpora and Producing a Japanese-Mongolian Bilingual Dictionary
This paper proposes methods for extracting loanwords from Cyrillic Mongolian corpora and producing a Japanese–Mongolian bilingual dictionary. We extract loanwords from Mongolian corpora using our own handcrafted rules. To complement the rule-based extraction, we also extract words in Mongolian corpora that are phonetically similar to Japanese Katakana words as loanwords. In addition, we corresp...

Fundamental frequenc...
